Runestad bills would increase openness and transparency

LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Jim Runestad announced Monday that he will be introducing legislation that would ensure openness and transparency for a Detroit institution funded by taxpayers.

Runestad’s bills would make the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) compliant with the Open Meetings Act and open their records to the Freedom of Information Act.

“My family and I love what the Detroit Institute of Arts brings to our community,” said Runestad, R-White Lake. “But every organization that receives taxpayer dollars should be transparent and accountable to the people who pay for it.

“This legislation would help bring the DIA’s operations into the light, which is necessary to continue that organization’s success so that families can enjoy this centerpiece of culture in Detroit for generations to come.”

Runestad said his legislation will be introduced this week.
