Runestad: Trump indictment a shameful display of political retaliation

LANSING, Mich. Sen. Jim Runestad issued the following response after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg confirmed the indictment of former President Donald Trump:

“This unprecedented action and abuse of power by the Manhattan district attorney is a flimsy attempt to hurt an opponent based on their politics.

“This abhorrent attempt by the district attorney weaponizes the U.S. justice system and uses one of our nation’s most sacred institutions against someone he disagrees with rather than focusing his office’s efforts on locking up criminals.

“I think it’s almost comical that a ‘soft-on-crime’ prosecutor who is known for issuing slap-on-the-wrist punishments and allowing career criminals to remain free to terrorize local residents and businesses now wants to go after a former president on feeble, questionable charges that have been criticized by legal experts on both sides of the aisle.

“The district attorney’s actions reek of vengeance and will only undermine the public’s trust in our justice system and further divide our country.

“America is supposed to be better than this. America is better than this.”
