LANSING, Mich. — Sen. Jim Runestad on Thursday voted yes on legislation that would enforce higher standards for drinking water at manufactured housing communities.
“Michiganders in manufactured housing have been treated like second-class citizens when it comes to access to clean water,” said Runestad, R-White Lake. “The corporations who own these communities must be held accountable. Residents of these communities, who faithfully pay their monthly lot fees, have endured unacceptable conditions, often forced to consume polluted and unsafe water. This neglect stems from the indifference of certain corporations who prioritize profits over the health and well-being of their tenants.”
Senate Bill 920 would enforce clean water standards utilized for public water systems on the private systems utilized by manufactured housing communities. Runestad joined a majority of the Senate to address the long-standing issue of contaminated water plaguing manufactured housing communities across Michigan.
“This measure represents a significant step forward in protecting public health and ensuring that every resident, regardless of where they live, can trust the water they consume,” Runestad said.
The bill has moved to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
