Sen. Runestad promises push for fair college admission standards following SCOTUS affirmative action ruling

LANSING, Mich. — State Sen. Jim Runestad, R-White Lake, issued the following statement Friday, vowing to advocate for more fair college admission practices in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling this week to strike down affirmative action:

“The Supreme Court was clear that race-based college admission practices violate equal rights protected by the 14th Amendment. This ruling has highlighted the need to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to pursue higher education based on achievement and merit, not the color of their skin or who their parents are. It is crucial that we now reexamine college admission standards in Michigan. I will work to eradicate any policy that puts an unfair thumb on the scale, including preferred treatment for so-called legacy admissions and the children of university employees.”
