LANSING, MI — Sen. Jim Runestad and 13 fellow Republicans, including Senate Republican Leader Aric Nesbitt, introduced a resolution on Wednesday in support of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s efforts to secure the southern border.
Senate Resolution 91 would recognize and “support the actions of the governor of Texas in furtherance of his constitutional right and responsibility to protect the citizens of his state and secure the border.”
The resolution comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a Biden administration lawsuit allowing the president and federal agencies to remove border security devices recently installed by the state of Texas.
“There is a torrent of illegal immigration flooding our southern border,” said Runestad, R-White Lake. “The Biden administration has left our border open to anyone and everyone, and I commend the actions that Gov. Abbott has taken to stem the tide that places such an incredible burden on our country.”
Illegal immigration in the United States is at an all-time high, with December 2023 recording 371,036 documented encounters, the highest ever in American history. The number of individuals on the U.S. Terrorism Watch List who have crossed the southern border is also on the rise, while news organizations are reporting that drug cartels are making upwards of $13 billion per year smuggling migrants across the border.
“We are joining with governors and officials across the country who understand that we must do more to stop the flood of drugs, crime, and terrorism that are pouring across our southern border,” said Nesbitt, R-Porter Township. “The Biden administration’s open border policies are a very real threat to the safety, security, and well-being of Michigan families. The American people deserve better.”
